Principal photography commenced in September 2021 with filming taking place in Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rajasthan and Aurangabad. The film's soundtrack and background score were composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by G. K. Vishnu and editing by Ruben.
Jawan was initially planned for release on 2 June 2023, but was postponed due to unfinished post-production work.[6] It is now scheduled for theatrical release on 7 September 2023, coinciding with Janmashtami.

The soundtrack is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, who would mark his debut as a solo composer in Bollywood, previously having composed a song for David and the background score of Jersey.[73] Initially, A. R. Rahman was reportedly approached by director Atlee to compose for the film.[74] Rahman subsequently declined the offer for reasons unknown, and Anirudh was chosen to compose for the film.[75] The music rights were bagged by T-Series for ₹36 crore,[76] which was a record price for a Hindi album.[77]
The track "Jawan Prevue Theme", featured in the two-minute promo video, was released on 10 July 2023.[78] It had rap written and performed by Raja Kumari, with Anirudh and BNiznik performing.[79] The first single titled "Zinda Banda" was released on 31 July 2023.[80] It garnered over 46 million views within 24 hours, setting an all-time record for most viewed Indian song in 24 hours.[81]
